It's funny you should mention the Cathedral. I owned one for about a year and could never quite get along with it. The more subtle settings for spring, hall etc were rather good, but I was never really that impressed with the reverse feature and the 2 second delay was mediocre at best.
The actual tone of the reverb was always a little too bright, especially when driven which gave it a tendency to blur into a treble-happy mess if you weren't careful
My biggest gripe, however, was with the infinite hold switch. No matter how I tried to smooth it out, it always sounded quite granular and glitchy since it operated on a simple sample and repeat system rather than just extending the decay time of the repeats.

I ended up selling it and buying an old Digitech PDS-3000 Pedalverb (see my post above), which I've got along with since day one. It doesn't have the tweakable nature of the Cathedral, but it doesn't really need it. The preamp allows for fantastic saturated washes of reverb, the reverse is better, it has a gated feature and the infinite hold switch (fairly groundbreaking for the late 80s!) is incredibly warm and I believe is actually an internal feedback loop rather than a sampler. The only drawback is that it's mono in, but it's still stereo out which makes up for it in my book.

I feel like I have to put in a good word for Cathedral, here. I don't think it's overpriced at all for what it can do (I got mine at $150 used, and I think that's about right). It's an impressively versatile pedal, and if you're looking for tweakability, I think it's the way to go. It's definitely a little bright, but I think that's an intentional design choice. Personally, I really like that kind of shimmery, celestial-sounding reverb. If I were looking for something darker, I guess I'd go for an RV-5 or something.

Anyway, all that to say: if the price is right (around $150), Cathedral is a great reverb pedal for shoegaze, dream pop, and post-rock. As far as non-boutique pedals go, I'd say it's the best all-around that I've tried.

Along with my recording software. Logic 9's Amp Designer and Pedalboard are awesome. Audio Damage's EOS reverb plugin is rather nice if you like those dense, grainy, 80s reverbs and I can't heap enough praise on the Soundtoys Native Effects bundle. Having played around with the Crystalizer harmoniser, Echoboy and Phase Mistress, it's like having an Eventide H3000 plus every good delay and phaser ever made! Not cheap, but astonishingly good.
