I can confirm that the 2006 Cherry Red/Rev-Ola rerelease of the Telescopes "Taste" (CR REV 152) is inferior in quality compared to the same songs from the Bomp release "As Approved by the Committee" (EVIL-10).

The Charlottes - Liar: The Best of The Charlottes (Cherry Red)

It came out around the time of of Blind Mr. Jones or Chapterhouse.

Informative thread... Thank you

Liar is okay.

I really don't think this is a problem of more releases. We would know about it. People would notice I suppose. Especially in this P2P era, where mp3's are floating on net. Many people check them with spectrum software. I would actually notice it too: I rip all my CD's to mp3 for flash player and if V0 rip was so low (the AVG bitrate) it would catch my eye.

He he. If someone posted Whirlpool reissue on torrents, he could be banned for posting transcode Smile. Even if he ripped V0, Flac or 320 he did it from lossy format 128 kbps Smile. Funny.

all this talk and finally decided to listen to the reissue. it sounds louder and clearer(?)

maybe some copies got messed up Question

what program can i check this out on a Mac?

Just because it sounds louder does not mean it is better. Search for information about the loudness wars. If anything it being louder is a sign it was mastered poorly.

i didn't say better Very Happy acutally it might sound more tinny (if that's a word)

I listened to both the original CD release of "Whirlpool" and the Cherry Red reissuie last night through a Linn Unidisk 2.1, Linn Kairn Preamplifier, Grado Reference Headphone Amplifier, and Grado RS-1 Headphones. Subjectively, the remaster is louder, grainier, with a boost in the upper bass and lower treble. A lot of remasters sound this way, which I gather is meant to make the recording sound better on car stereo's and other low-fi reproduction systems. The original has more sheen and air around the instruments, the vocals sound more heavenly, and the rhythm section seems to have more spring and a more infectuous sense of timing. In short, the remaster sounds very digitized, the original sounds much more analog-liike. I'm very glad I kept the original. Still--in my opinion--t's nothing like the butchering Iggy Pop did to his own "Raw Power" remix when compared to the original David Bowie/Mainman mix, but I doubt if very many people under 40 would agree with me Mad

Hey I contacted Stephen about this, both him and Andy have been busy.

The cd was in fact ripped improperly and Cherry Red is going to repress the cd and will exchange the lo-fi version for the new hi-fi version. I'm not sure when this will happen. I will post more when Stephen gets back to me with all the details. i will also post about this on my site www.comeheaven.com

has anyone done analysis on this one as well? maybe this suffers from the same problem and needs to be repressed too. I will alert Stephen Lawrie about it

Thank you for info and all the effort! I am glad it didn't "die". I have never heard from Cherry Red again.

Yes, there are variations on this release too, although not as obvious as with the Whirlpool release.

I'm glad you were able to get a response on this from both the label and the band. Usually nothing happens. Good work!

What a cock-up. They never have any luck, do they, Chapterhouse? I remember when they were doing Blood Music and guitarist Simon had loads of DATs stolen from his car containing ideas and hooks etc. And then the album was pulled over a legal row over the samples on Deli, which effectively killed the band stone dead. (I presume the Cherry Red reissue of that CD won;t include Deli??). Let's hope they sort Whirlpool out first.

Reminds me of the old Beatles upmix fiasco regarding the 2nd boxset. This is not good news as I was actually looking into purchasing Whirlpool remastered to see how it sounds.

Glad I checked the forums before. Sad

it's not remastered, it's just a re-release

The controversy is that the re-release is much poorer in quality than the original, when it should be at least equal.
