Which brand and model amplifier do you recommend for producing a shoegaze style sound when playing in small venues? Are there any favorited over others? Or will anyone of them work fine?
Thanks, Andrew |

i'd say that your question is pretty open for opinion on this..
personally, i don't recommend buying any new amps on the market, or anything dated in the past 5 years (maybe even 10). they just aren't built the same way, if you don't believe me, just talk to any dude that is into amps and doesn't work at a sam ash or guitar center. they are made with cheaper components and mass produced which ultimately leads to breaking faster and sound suffering.
we really dig fenders and rolands. fender twin reverbs, blues devilles, regular devilles, all sound really wicked and you can find them used for $500-1000.
roland jc-120's are amazing and can handle a lot of abuse, the jc77's are awesome too. you can find them from like $200-600
You can use whatever you want to make your own style of shoegaze sounds, just don't let the soundman tell you to put your amp volume on 3. whenever they tell you to turn it down, turn it up 2 notches more. _________________ http://www.screenvinylimage.com

| I have a VOX AC30, made in the good o'le People's Republic of China! It's a fucking great amp, amazing tones, versatile, and reliable. I wouldn't compare one to a vintage " Jennings " VOX, than again I've never seen or played one! But...it's plenty loud enough for a 30W to do small gigs. |

I dunno I've owned a few amps, my first was a Peavey Bandit, I don't remember where that was made but it was pretty good for the price I payed. Then when my band started touring I bought a Marshall VS100 half stack, made in the UK, and it sucked. It's probably the worst amp I've owned. The Bandit sounded better. I ran a rack setup for a while now, I recently switched to a little Epiphone Valve Jr, Just to cut back on setup time. It's not as nice sounding as my rack but it blows the VS100 out of the water and it's made in China. The factory tubes in it sucked, but those where the only part of the amp not Chinese made.
I try to stay away from Chinese products when I can but it's not as much the quality of the products that bothers me, it's the way they do business that gets under my skin. Of course that's just as much our governments problem as China's.
It's probably better I stay away from politics in a music forum, but my point is use your ears when you pick an amp. |

| Funny, my 1st amp was a Peavy Bandit too. Sounded good with a tube screamer and Cry Baby wah. The worst amp I ever owned was also a Marshall ValveState, the AVT50. I spent months trying to coax a decent tone out of that thing to no avail. Terrible. On the other hand, one of the best amps I owned was a 50 watt JCM800. Loud as hell though. |

I always thought that was the problem with the JCMs, you have to turn them up to loud to get any good tone out of them. 90% of the clubs and bars my band played were just to small for that sort of amp. Better to just have a small amp and let the sound guy mic it.
I'd still love to have one of course just because they look great on stage or sitting in my studio but I just don't think I'd get enough use out of a JCM and like most musicians my budgets pretty tight. |

Yeah, I hear ya. I got a pretty good deal on the JCM800 'cuz it was used, but it was still a lot of money. But, my God, that thing was loud! I tried it with an attenuator, but then all the tone got sucked out it. I had to get rid of it, it was too much to handle. Still, it had the ballsiest roar I've ever heard when I was able to crank it....which wasn't very often.
An 18Watt Marshall would be a nice alternative, or one of the many clones out there. But again....pricey.
