As far as I know, no bands specifically have been linked to the church burnings. That was all done by the fans.

Also, metal-wise my favorite metal band of all time is Hypocrisy. if only for thier album 4th dimension.

Greven (the Count) of Burzum who killed Euronymous got added time in jail for burning down a church. He escaped from prison and got caught again. He won't be out for a while.

I thought Euronymous killed himself.

the killing that landed the Burzum guy in jail was the stabbing the olympic gardens or whatever.

My old friend replaced shoegaze with Artmetal, Viking Metal. Finland seems to have a ton of great metal bands going on. not quite my thing, but I can appreciate.

He was into bands like

Lumsk
Soelfald
Bokanar(or however it is spelled)

Borknagar. The guitarist in that band is the guy that started the annual 'Inferno' festival in Oslo, Norway.

There is a fairly good account of 'Greven' and his 'works' at wikipedia.

Black metal is hit and miss with me.

The tasteless part is that these guys go to extremes to be extreme. Anti-religion, corpse paint, church burning, spikes, theatrics etc.

Some of it artistically is very interesting and pulled off quite well. Everyting that Garm has been involved in is great. The transformation Ulver made over the years was amazing.

There are many bands which exploit the buzzing, dense, lo-fi and melodic sound of Dark Throne. If you do some digging, a shoegaze fan will be guaranteed to find something that appeases them.

pretty sure it was Dead who killed himself ... there's a Mayhem bootleg with his post-death picture on the cover.

Yes. Dead killed himself and Varg killed Euronymous. Mayhem are one of my favorite bands. Well, early Mayhem. The problem with most of the really good black metal bands is that they put out two or three great albums and go immediately downhill. Like Dimmu Borgir. Their first album is great. Their recent stuff makes me shudder it's so overproduced and hokey.

I've gotten a bit bored of black metal...I still listen to bands like nortt and elysian blaze, but the whole corpsepaint and satan thing has been way overdone.Every other band you know for a fact is a bedroom band.

There are a few bands that I still listen to from my era of black metal music. Good black metal is really artful, which is hard to explain to anyone.

Grown up, no corpse paint, and good ideals are what I look for in when I want to listen to this type of music. Not bands that do black metal as an extreme type of metal either...

Velvet Cacoon, Alcest, Amesoeurs, Burzum (yes, don't read about him and listen), Wolves in the Throne Room, ColdWorld, Ildjarn, and plenty more... They exist, you just have to weed through all the bands people like a lot.
